From Corporate to CDL: The Journey That Built MyCDLCoach

My path into trucking didn’t start on the road.

It started after 15 years in the corporate world — meetings, structure, stability. But everything changed when my brother, who’s been a fleet owner for over a decade, introduced me to the CDL industry.

What I stepped into was a world I wasn’t prepared for.

A world that runs this country — but doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.

My Start: Dispatch Manager for Amazon

My first role in trucking was as a Dispatch Manager working with Amazon Relay, managing over 40 company drivers.

Dispatching through Amazon’s system was organized. Predictable. Structured. Drivers were home daily, miles were steady, and operations ran efficiently.

But something stood out to me quickly.

There was money being left on the table.

Company drivers had stability — but their ability to scale their income and grow long-term was limited. The system worked, but it kept drivers inside a box.

That was my first real lesson in trucking:

Security and opportunity are not always the same thing.

Leaning Into Ownership

After my first year dispatching company drivers, I made a decision that changed everything.

I purchased three trucks and stepped into the owner-operator side.

That’s when I saw the other side of the industry.

Owner-operators face more responsibility, more pressure, more risk — but also far more opportunity to scale.

And this is where I discovered one of the biggest game changers in trucking.

When DAT Became the Goldmine

Load boards like DAT changed the entire game once I truly understood them.

At first, it’s just listings.

But once you learn:

  • How to read rates

  • How lanes move

  • How seasonality affects freight

  • How to reduce deadhead

  • How to position trucks strategically

DAT becomes more than a load board.

It becomes a strategy tool.

A revenue tool.

A survival tool.

I learned how creative you can be in trucking when you have information. Keeping trucks moving wasn’t luck — it was understanding data and making smart decisions.

That’s when I realized:

Most drivers and even many dispatchers never get taught this part.

Seeing Both Sides Revealed the Gap

I saw the company driver world.
I saw the owner-operator world.

Both have advantages. Both have struggles.

But both sides shared the same problem:

Lack of time, resources, and connection

Drivers are:

  • On the road

  • Away from family

  • Focused on loads

  • Trying to stay compliant

Dispatchers are:

  • Managing multiple drivers

  • Handling constant changes

  • Dealing with industry shifts

  • Under pressure daily

There’s little time left for:

  • Learning

  • Networking

  • Growing

  • Planning long-term

That gap is why MyCDLCoach was born.

Why MyCDLCoach Exists

MyCDLCoach bridges the gap between:

We’re creating new drivers for the long haul — and rewarding experienced drivers who are willing to help them grow.

Because imagine this:

Getting paid not just to drive…
But to share knowledge, network, and help others win.

That’s real community.

This Industry Deserves More

Trucking is not for the weak.

It takes:

  • Time

  • Sacrifice

  • Skill

  • Discipline

Drivers move this country. Yet too many feel isolated, underappreciated, and stuck just chasing the next load.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

MyCDLCoach is about changing how the world sees this industry — and how drivers see their own potential.

You deserve more than just miles.
